We heard some ridiculous hyperbole last year- Mangum looked better than ever, SEC size and speed, the team could challenge for a NY6 spot, Portland State's DBs were actually really good so don't worry about the receivers, etc.
My theory is that what was actually happening was the overall level of play was not very good on either side and so a lot of players looked good because the guys they were facing in practices weren't very good. The results of the season seem to support that theory.
Last season would've been a lot easier to swallow had the media been honest and said, "look guys, we just lost two incredible athletes in Taysom and Williams, and the guys trying to replace them aren't as good. Also, we aren't returning much production from our receivers so the offense may struggle this season."
But nope, instead it was full steam ahead on the hype train.
