At least arguably, a “lengthy” criminal record (of any kind, and regardless of
the nature of the crimes) is an indicator of general irresponsibility. A high level of general responsibility seems to be something we’d want in a person who’s job is to avoid deadly accidents. A more responsible person may have avoided this accident entirely.
