It’s rude to not ask
The dialogue makes sense. If I’m in a car, I can't imagine jamming my front car seat all the way back into the rear passenger’s lap without first saying something. Why should it be any different on a plane?

It’s actually much more intrusive on a plane. You can’t eat or work on a laptop when the seat comes back. It just shows a lack of empathy in my opinion.
