it doesn't have to be an LDS hire....
...I'd argue getting a non-LDS assistant coach would've been the better move. Maybe even a double minority. Louis Wilson is available now and has close to 20 yrs coaching experience in college at a multitude of levels, JC, DII and DI who's been both a HC (DII level) as well as an assistant. He's worked with Bill Evans (LDS coach formerly at SUU and currently at Idaho St) for years and most recently under Tim Duryee at Utah St. He gets LDS athletes, knows the inter-mountain west area well (lived in Utah for years, coached in Utah, Colorado and Idaho) recruits really well, was like brothers with Geno Morgan former HC and architect of Wasatch Academy's basketball program) and was the reason Koby McEwen (top 100 player) went to Utah St.

He knows instinctively when a player needs to be challenged to give more or when he needs an arm around him. He's a good X's and O's coach and would bring a really distinctly unique perspective to the coaching staff at BYU, a definite agent for change. He would've loved to have coached at BYU (his wife's family is LDS) and stayed in Utah (just move from Logan down to Utah Valley). He's the kind of coach whose "dawg" is definitely a pit bull or a rotty and can bring that out in his players and has been instrumental in the development of Sam Merrill at Utah St (soph, 16.3 pts 46% from 3). He was a 2 star player from Bountiful who's only DI offer was Utah St and now this kid is turning into a star for the Aggies.
