Many on here have gone after Detmer for his remarks in the paper on having a hard schedule and inexperienced team. The prevailing thought seems to be that he’s trying to justify his poor coaching. My sense of Detmer makes me think his remarks are coming from a different motivation.

I think Detmer is a coach at heart and in his life. He was raised by a coach and he has become a coach himself. His first instinct is and always will be to protect and teach his players. So when he says, “the team my senior year would have gone 0-6 with that tough of a schedule”, what he is really doing is telling the players to shake off the negative attitude and put it in perspective.

I really don’t think it is in Ty Detmer’s personality to try to dodge responsibility or rationalize his own failures.
