I think at one point it was pride in his work and taking care of his family, but I believe it did move into evil. He killed or was responsible for killing numerous people, and not just people who were threatening him or his family. And he didn't ride into the white supremacists camp in the finale to save Jesse (the same Jesse who he paid those guys to kill). I don't think he could've known Jesse was there. He just went for revenge.
