Smyth had been there for decades so it was probably time for him to move on either way. He coached a great program but in my opinion it was a team that in recent years should've been better than it was on the field considering the talent the team had. Obviously, we don't know the full story of how things went down but the silver lining is that it has put a public magnifying glass on the Rugby program that was not there before. Here's hoping that leads to some changes and the hiring of good coaches that will give the team the tools for success those players deserve.
In the U.S, the game of Rugby is going through a renaissance period, the Eagles are ranked #15 in the world which is the highest they've ever been and Major League Rugby (the first U.S pro league) just concluded its first season. These are all signs that American Rugby is gaining not losing popularity. Hopefully, the BYU brass recognizes that.
