Silly comment on your end. Of course they should check on someone representing,
the university! Do you not think Nike, McDonald's etc would have someone represent their brand without a quick check. BYU is keenly aware of perception, so the PR department should be all over this.
Welcome to 2018! It should be easy this day and age (as it is for those who want to find fault), additionally you could just ask the player.
