Schools provide these opportunities to give students opportunities to explore
their capabilities. In the case of BYU football, the opportunity could be provided to the students at a much lower cost. This would necessitate a significant drop in funding, and likely as much less quality product. The team could be in an FCS conference and still do what you describe.
