RE: BYU's future potential for football

The future is bright for BYU football--but we need to "go big or go home":

1)  The athletic budget must be fully funded and we can't go cheap on coaches anymore. The church can take the heat just fine--we have tougher skin than we have had in the past. Just look at the criticisms over LGBT, more exposure of JS polygamy and doctrinal issues, and the huge investment in City Creek. The brethren are wearing their big boy pants and have run in the biggest circles anywhere when it comes to business and public relations.  The money is there--and plenty of folks are willling to step up and fund into perpetuity coaches salaries, stadium improvements, staff needs, and anything else that's needed--all without diluting tithing contributions. The church is almost 200 years old and is ready to move into prime time on every level. If we go big we will either get into a P5 or be more successful as an independent. Let's do this--the future is bright!

2)  The honor code does not need to go away or be softened--but we have to be more sophisticated, adept, and inspired in how we apply it.  Kids make mistakes--returned missionaries make mistakes, and so do kids from the inner city.  In talking to student ward bishops, BYU students are often not referred to the Honor Code Office for very significant moral infractions.  When they are referred they remain in school. On the other hand non-member student athletes or even member athletes are more severely disciplined.  We need to take the level of "embarassment" out of the equation and apply the honor code more uniformly.

3)  The church needs to market BYU athletics like never before--we have the machine to do it.
