When I was reffing soccer, I was surprised how poorly defensive lines were
organized. The vast majority of the teams I reffed always dropped 1 to 2 players 5-10 yards behind the last offensive player.

Ohere was one notable exception. This team barely made it into the playoffs, but then had a nice run to the 4a semifinals. Their first match was against the defending state champions and the number 1 seed in the first round. They won that game by using an offside trap the whole game. It was like they spent the season figuring it out, and were able to very effectively use this tactic during games. I got yelled at so much and called blind, stupid, ignorant, etc. Eventually I started pointing at players who were in an offside position just so the coaches could see he was offside and not shocked when I raised the flag. Didn't help. When they switched sides after the first half, the other AR called a ton of offsides too. Didn't stop the yelling. On the way to the car, a dad seriously wanted to fight me. That was a good time to retire. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
