As a veteran who has recently (~3 years) transitioned from the service, I
completely understand where he is right now and it is miserable.
His experience, most likely, is running a ~40 man "platoon" or a ~130 man "company" where is making a lot of the critical and important decisions, building culture, mentoring younger soldiers/officers, improving teams, and having a clear mission.
The corporate world can be so difficult at times.
