Many of the best coaches were not gifted players! They worked hard to play.
They figured out what works and what doesn’t. They have very little margin for error because less gifted players (who become Coaches) had to be fundamentally sound and have great work ethic to find some PT. Sound technique and work ethic is the only chance the “underdog” will ever see the field. The gifted talent, many times, never had to rely on precise technique and work ethic and can still get by on natural ability alone. If you are recruiting freaks of nature oftentimes they make you look good not the other way around!

We don’t recruit many of those kind of players. We need big time coaching to develop talent to succeed at the major D1 level. That’s just the way it normally works.
