Context certainly matters. And in this case the fan misread the context in
which it’s appropriate to use that term.
He didn’t know better than to use the term boy when conversing with a black man.
It doesn’t matter that he says the same thing to a friend or stranger at the club.
This isn’t the club/disco/dance hall. That term is out of line. I’m sure he didn’t know that but now he does.
