This is such a Mormon-centric viewpoint.
People drink when they do x so the alcohol must be the reason.

Surprise to you here. BYU HAD a tailgate culture once upon a time. And it had nothing to do with alcohol. How can that be you ask? Well because tailgating was and always will be about making a day of a football game and celebrating the greatness that is college football in a college football town. Alcohol was second. Now, in the growing generation who don’t understand nor care about football the tailgate may be an excuse to stand around a 24 pack and down drink after drink.

But for those who actually tailgate and actually out in time and money they do it because their friends and family will be there.

Saying alcohol is the only reason why people get together is so very naive. And a bit of a skewed view of history and life.
