Even if he's better than most players shooting from long range, scoring efficiency is obviously not higher when shooting from that distance than from closer. If he really can hit that shot 50% of the time like some here are saying, he should shoot from 40 feet every time down the court, and the Blazers will set an all time record for offensive efficiency. But he can't. If you are losing, then you need to get a better shot than that at the end.
One difference here is that they were tied and OKC had a timeout. If they run a play to try to get a better shot, then sometimes that shot gets taken before the time runs out, giving the other team a final chance win or tie the game up again after they rebound and call timeout. It makes sense in a way to guarantee that either you win or go to OT.
