got a ton of open looks against Houston and just couldn't knock them down. And that was with nearly always having at least 2 and sometimes 3 really flawed offensive players sharing the court.
Were they getting open looks because Snyder's scheme is just that good? Partly. Open looks because Houston didn't care if the crappy Jazz players were shooting? Partly. Open looks because they overloaded so much against Donovan and Gobert's rim runs because, again, Utah had crappy offensive players? Partly. Having even one more consistent shooter completely changes things (as long as he's not a broken 38 year old). And subbing one inept offensive player for one inept defensive player isn't going to all of a sudden turn Utah's defense into the Phoenix Suns. That's the advantage of having Rudy Gobert, not just giving you the chance to be one of the best defensive teams each year, but giving you a chance to be a good offensive squad that isn't miserable defensively.
The plan to go Rudy/Favors/Exum, to shrink the court and make scoring on Utah like a dentist appointment was fine and dandy when Lindsey first talked about that. But then the league morphed, the rules and their enforcement changed. Now it's time to enjoy the defensive anchor you have so someone like Galinari or Kemba can boost your offense but not cripple your defensive scheme.
