The same-day resignations that I’m aware of at my work had already put in notice
But they “announced” to the rest of the world on their last day.
So those who aren’t involved in the transition dont have any clue until they are walking out the door.

Typically if you resign instead of being let go, you don't get unemployment insurance.

It depends. If they pay you for the two weeks then it is still voluntary.

What does it mean to "resign"? I retire, quit, get laid off, or get fired.

The impression given is that these people are voluntarily leaving immediately
