Often when an employee resigns they already have a job with a competitor

In those cases letting the stick around for their two weeks isn’t beneficial to the company so they will accept their resignation and ask them to leave immediately. The company I’m with accepts the resignation and pays you the two weeks left but doesn’t want you working anymore so they send you home and change your login

Typically if you resign instead of being let go, you don't get unemployment insurance.

It depends. If they pay you for the two weeks then it is still voluntary.

What does it mean to "resign"? I retire, quit, get laid off, or get fired.
