far, and better imo if you work for the right company. I'd freelance or go out on my own, but the earning potential doesn't really offset the higher cost of things like health insurance, needing to take full accountability of retirement savings, having a more difficult time getting a home loan, being able to roll with punches during lean months, etc. My dad's businesses ranged from 3-40 employees, and the freedom to pick his own hours or be the final decision maker wasnt worth the stress of the busy months, nor the anger/fear in the lean months. That's just my opinion, of course. I appreciate the risk that owners assume, but I'm not interested in becoming one of them. Been there, seen that, no thanks.
