if they already had a large house and just wanted to keep it for that reason then it makes a bit more sense than building one for that reason although that might be what keeps my wife and I from downsizing. We like that we can have large gatherings at our house and that isn’t possible, at least not comfortably, if you don’t have the space for it. As I’ve gotten older and my kids are leaving home I’ve found I like having reasons for them to come home and spend time so if that means I need to keep a larger place then I think that is worth it. We’re in the analysis phase of making that decision.
