BYU football is experiencing some serious growing pains. Some uncomfortable times we're experiencing right now were expected when we chose to go independent. You can reference LaVell's and Bronco's records all you want but they had the benefit of playing practically the same teams year in and year out. If you don't think that's an advantage then I can't help you.
There's no doubt that Kalani isn't living up to our expectations but at least be real about it. He's a first time HC. He made serious rookie mistakes by hiring a bunch of an inexperienced buddies/former players. He's having to navigate through some really weird times for us as an independent football team. His recruits are just starting to return from missions and seeing the field.
I'm not excusing Kalani for losing to UMASS, USU, or Utah like he has been. But let's not kid ourselves in thinking Bronco was much better against them, especially his last few years. Do you really think Bronco left because he thought this road ahead was going to be easy? No way. He knew it was going to get a lot harder before it got better and he chose to take advantage of a job well done and pick up the skrilla while he could. I don't blame the guy, but let's hold back on immortalizing him and making it seem like he was a 10 win season coach the latter half of his career (FYI, he wasn't).
So sure, give Kalani a hard time about losing when we should win. That's what we should do as fans. 2017 was a super crappy season. But let's also not act like we're Alabama that has coaches clamoring to come here because we have such an easy path to the playoffs every year. The BYU football HC position has been said to be the toughest in the game. Give the guy some credit for making the changes he needed to and for doing a great job recruiting some solid kids this year. Give him a chance to go out there and win without the added pressure (I say added because he knows it's there and feels it) of the fans slipping the noose around his neck.
