Sure - I've seen some home made canoes that should never see anything more than the local community pond and have no business going on a trip like that. But I've also seen some very well build canoes that boys made with their dads and leaders - that were every bit as good as a wooden canoe you'd find in a sporting goods store.

I guess I just don't live in a world of absolutes. I'd agree that MOST folks don't know what they're doing well enough to build their own and pull it off. But I'm not going to say that there is no one who could lead that building project and pull off a great activity with homemade boats.
