Exactly this. The boats they made were a really cool project on their own, but for paddling around on a stillwater
until they fall apart. Even then I'd bring one real canoe for picking people up.

Not for loading with gear, not for a river run, and not to be relied upon for anything.

It's a one-in-10,000 leader who could/would teach and help boys make real canoes that could handle something like this. Huge investment of time and money and have to have actual expertise.
