Not a terrible opinion, given the way BYU's season ended, but who would you give
it to then for the 1990 season? Rocket Ismail was way more style than substance - he finished with 6 total touchdowns in the entire year. He certainly made some dazzling plays during the season, but hard to give the Heisman to a guy who was mostly notable for being a dangerous return man.

And Notre Dame finished that year 9-3 and ranked #16 nationally - which is fine, but nothing spectacular.

Obviously BYU got pounded in the two games after the Heisman announcement, so one could argue that Detmer didn't exactly deserve the trophy, but it's not like there was another particularly awesome candidate that year who got robbed.
