I think you are both right... and wrong...
1) Some teachers do suck and give the profession a bad name
2) A lot of teachers are awesome, work really hard during the school year, and put in extra unpaid time in the summers.
3) All teachers have an enormous impact, good and bad, on our children.
4) We should want the best teachers, those who teach well AND those who engage and positively impact the kids the most, teaching our children.
5) The current compensation system is broken. It neither rewards or encourages the best results for teaching.
6) If we saw positive results in public education that rewards great teachers and develops great kids, we'd all be willing to pay for that. (Hence the reason families search for school districts where they want their children and are willing to pay higher housing costs, rents, taxes, etc. to live in those districts.)

Finally) To say ALL school teachers are paid what they are worth is a horrifically false statement.

My wife is a school teacher. She loves what she does. Her colleagues, students and parents appreciate her greatly. She chooses to do teach instead of doing something that pays more. She has the luxury of being able to make that choice based on our combined income level and decisions on lifestyle.

As an outsider, with an inside of view of the system, I think it is broken. I love my wife for doing what she does and seeing the influence she has on the kids she works with.
