The Trib has given op-ed space to crazy people, people who have chosen to bash the Church, BYU, etc. I understand why they do it. Those people live in our neighborhoods. We pass them in the grocery store. But those decisions have alienated predominate culture readers and contributed to the paper's failings.
I don't think its religious reporting is unfair (reporting not op-ed/editorials). I don't think its BYU sports reporting is unfair. It's the de facto investigative reporting outlet in Utah. The writing isn't always great, but I'm not overly sensitive about that. I don't think journalism is particularly easy.
Newspapers are failing coast to coast. I believe the Trib's problems stem from both its often antagonistic approach and the decline of newspapers nationwide.
