The only reason you can say that is because NOP won the lottery.
That was pure luck. Just look at the number of draft picks that changed hands this summer. They aren't being as valued as much as they were in years past. I'm sure some of those picks will yield good results. But they had a top 5 player in the NBA. The chances of them having another top 5 player in the league as a result of the trade is very small. So yes, he did torpedo them.
