You're underestimating the impact their preference makes on the
negotiations. If a player makes it known for the world to hear that he is going to Team X, no other team will make a serious offer for him. Toronto did anyway and won a championship, which is great. But Kawhi still left. Two teams gambled on trading for star players that said they wanted to go to LA. Both are now in LA. Do you think no other team noticed?
