No reason to tell lies
From every article I have read, the coaches didn't know anything about it.

"Utah State's head coach, Matt Wells, said Thursday that he found out about the allegations within the past week, from the university."

"I take allegations of sexual assault extremely seriously, and we in USU Athletics take action — decisive and immediate action — as soon as it’s appropriate. That is our record to this point in the football program when a player breaks team rules, and it will always be our record in every Athletics program.
Coach Wells during his tenure as head coach has a proven track record for disciplining and dismissing players, and he does not wait for an arrest to trigger action. He has dismissed key players for violating the team rules, and he applies his standards consistently – whether the person is on the scout team or a first-team impact player. Within the last 14 months, Coach Wells has dismissed two all-conference student athletes."
