In reality, I dont think Monson gives a crap about either university, even though he is a BYU grad. Hes a very smart dude, and has learned how to troll both fanbases and use the rivalry to generate clicks and sell papers. Monson aint no dummy. He's been playing this game very successfully for a lot of years. You just gotta see through it all and understannd his angle.
