I think you're trying to compare apples and oranges though. It'd be one thing if they bring in a different QB or RB to run the play, but they aren't. When you're skipping every other QB and RB on the team for guys who no longer play those positions and you think it will run smooth every time you're just wrong. It's all about perfecting the craft, and none of those guys play those positions anymore and thereby are not perfecting the craft of that position. They may be competent but when you're only brought it for a play or two a game you're not going to run it as well as those that have been doing it for the other 59 minutes of the game.
It has nothing to do with any of the three not being quality players, I just don't see the point of it when you have others that are skilled in those roles. You can reference their HS playing years but those days are literally years ago for them. They've honed their skills to what they're currently doing today and they're good at them. To bring them in to run random plays is just trying to get too cute and increases your risk (turnovers, injuries, etc).
