It doesn't help all the time.
My point is that different types of books can be enjoyable for different reasons.
Would I find the Silmarillion more enjoyable than the others w/out having read LoTR and The Hobbit first? Definitely not.
Do I find it enjoyable despite not being full of humor? Absolutely.
