There's two ways to be a big underdog.
Play a team that's really good, like top 5 or so, or be thought of as pretty bad.
Either way, top 5 teams are generally top 5 for a reason, and there are generally legit reasons why people would think you're bad. So, yes, scoring a big underdog upset is fairly rare.

I think there's a pretty good chance that the variance of actual vs predicted spreads is greater for openers
