Some personal experience

I have caught hundreds, perhaps into the low thousands of mice. I lived in a rural area, near farms, and had other property besides my house that I had to constantly patrol to keep clean of rodents. The first thing to do is to try to seal up entry points, of course, but that is really hard to get 100% effective. I once had red squirrels chew their way into the eaves of a house to make their nest, just because they could.

Apart from that, never use poison. It can work, but they'll die in your walls and stink them up. It's also bad for other animals that will eat the dead or dying rodents should they make it outside.

Glue traps are cruel. The mice are often found struggling, and then you have to drown them anyway. I've also come across them with a tail or a foot that was gnawed off to get free. With a snap trap it's over in moments.

Bait your snap trap with peanut butter, and butt it up against the wall--preferably a corner--with the bait side closest to the wall. They can't spring free as easily, and are less alarmed if they can creep around the edges of the room. Find the places with mouse droppings, especially if they're close to the food.

Mice are relatively easy to trap if you do it right. Rats, on the other hand, are a nightmare. They're far more clever, and can learn how to trip the trap to get the food without harming themselves. Also, a good rat trap is nerve-wracking to set. I sometimes had success with live traps, that you then had to take to the river or a bucket of water to finish off the job. Not a pleasant task.
