You can do that, but don't run a car very long without the cables hooked to
the battery. Your alternator doesn't produce consistent power output. It will ebb and spike. Your battery acts as a buffer between the alternator and your car's electrical systems and smooths out any spikes in current. Running your car without the battery connected can cause you to blow fuses or fry electrical systems.
