I think the age of the perp (and therefore likelihood of re-offending after
getting out of prison) is a relevant consideration here, for the reasons you mentioned.

Asking a kid to re-live his trauma in an effort to put a 25-year-old dude in prison for 40 years (rather than 10 years) might be worthwhile, given that this kid's efforts might be able to spare future victims.

Asking a kid to re-live his trauma in an effort to put a 75-year-old man in prison for 40 years (rather than 10 years) makes a lot less sense.
