South Africa is a different beast...rape is very common
in the townships. The big city townships are incredibly violent. When I was there there was no discrimination in terms of who gets carjacked, murdered, or assaulted...young, old, foreigners were all frequent victims. I would never go into a township or really anywhere unless I was in group of 6+.
There are many beautiful areas all throughout, but you need to go with eyes wide open.

You do have to be careful but you can also travel through South Africa and never know the crime is there.
