RE: But what was the motivation?

No offense taken. I think most of this board, save it the original poster would love to see the program get past some of the issues with recruiting and falling behind. As for Tafua, Mika could have gone anywhere out of high school PAC wise. He chose BYU, but was soft throughout his commitment. When TBS actually had a great board with real connected user to recruits, there was a piece of him that always seemed to want something different than BYU. It's not for everybody, even for worthy church members. But he took a few trips and committed anyway

Fast forward 2 years. Mika comes home to the dumpster fire that is 2017. Incompetence at all levels. Whatever doubts Mika had or didn't have prior to leaving, definately came about. He also had filled out and as a DT there are very few places in the country that you'd get the development at that spot that you do at Utah. So he committed to BYU over the very best PAC schools, but left because he didn't want to play for a team where they were not just losing but regressed as the season went on, no development, and no vision. Put yourself in his shoes, what do you do and it has nothing to do with conference in his situation. 2017 did so much damage with that class and anybody in the cycle that I'm not sure fans comprehend it's not just about Mika, McKee, Kaho, and Ika. All the kids that were Fr, So, Jr's all saw that.

As for Katoa, a guy I work with worked(coached) Taylor and 100% had they landed in the Big 12 during the dog and pony beauty show, he'd have landed at BYU according to this guy This guy was 100% anti-BYU so he'd have no reason to make that up.
