Porter Gustin's first choice was BYU. Bronco Mendenhall refused to take him; his official line was that he didn't agree that Gustin was that good, but there were said to have been other factors involved making him someone that Mendenhall did not want on the team. He really could have gone anywhere he wanted; Urban Meyer at Ohio State came to recruit him once it became clear that he would not get an offer from Mendenhall.
