overblown. The houston astros road winning percentage that year was .654 and was tops in baseball that season. in the 81 games played on the road that season they scored 501 runs which was the best in all of baseball. The cheating that happened was at home where the winning percentage was only .593. The Astros were a much better road team then they were a home that season. This just tells me that the sign stealing isn't all that effective or else the home road splits would be completly swapped that season.
It sounds like there were certainly players cheating and trying to get an advantage, much like the steroid era wherein some players were trying to get an edge, but this sign stealing thing when you look at the winning percentages tells me it's a bunch of bunk. Really too bad they did it at all, and it sounds like Cora and Beltran were the architects of this whole thing and they are paying their price for it. But for this Astros fan it's really overblown and if they weren't so good it would be a non starter. No one would think anything of it if it were the Mariners and they were stealing signs but because the Astros won it all it is a bigger story.
