By the time the cops talk to you, they have already decided you are guilty.
Every thing they innocently ask you, every topic they get you to brush on, will be solely used for the purpose to get you to say the one thing that is then deemed a confession. In 99% of all criminal cases, the best evidence the cops have is the stupid statement the defendant gave while he thought he was just going to be able to explain all this.
If you want to tell the police something, tell your lawyer and he can talk to the police.

my client took the stand once on sentencing and I'm sure talked himself into an extra couple years in jail
