Odds are he put the helicopter in a climb and without visual cues
He flipped the copter over. Which would explain the rapid ascent followed by the rapid descent.
If the copter had simply experienced mechanical issues, the pilot would have been able to do a controlled descent / glide - yes copters can glide and it is part of the pilot certification.
