Obviously they didn't go indy because they got the contract.
But they did need some evidence to boosters and fans that they could make indy work. I was led to believe (somewhat deceived) by the accompanying ND series announcement that they would be playing ND often along with other big time programs. It got fans excited and confident that indy was the way to go.
