I asked myself a simlar question. I personally think it's more attention to
detail and teaching the players when and where to move. I watch some other teams play and they are definitely not just standing there but they are also not moving effectively. It often seems like you can tell they're not totally sure where they should be moving and why. First it takes the coach understanding what kind of motion and angles will lead to open shots. Then he needs to effectively get his players to understand that but not just understand it, they need to practice it enough to not have to think about it during the game.

I think a lot of coaches can get their players to give full effort. It's when those players know what they're doing by instinct through teaching and repetition that the effort really pays off.

My 9th grade basketball coach had 2 undefeated seasons in a row and his practices were very simple. He drilled just a few basic things over and over and over so our team was able to make the right decisions quickly without thinking about it.

My coach for my senior year started somewhat the opposite. I had a list that filled up two pages with names of plays that we were supposed to know. There were only few of those I could remember when they were called out. We started the season 4-7. He then threw out most of the plays and simplified our offense to just a few basic plays and principles, and we could just play loose without thinking too much. We didn't lose another game after that.
