Zach is the best QB on the roster — objective analysis reveals this
I think it's worthwhile to review these QB group rankings from 2019. The analysis is really sound. Zach had the higher skill throws, better wins, and there's more to the story on his turnovers. I'm not suggesting he doesn't have anything to work on. He needs every day of his offseason to improve, especially his end of game two minute drill. But the failures of his teammates and coaching this year really hurt him. Excerpt:

"46. ZACH WILSON, JAREN HALL, BAYLOR ROMNEY – BYU
Preseason Rank: 30; Week 6 Rank: 122; Week 12 Rank: 77
Had he participated in more than nine games, you can be sure you’d find Wilson and BYU much higher on this list this season. Still, the Cougars got plus play from both Hall and Romney this year but were a much better team with a much higher win percentage with Wilson at the helm. Wilson combined for more big-time throws than Hall and Romney combined, and despite two games to end the year with no touchdowns against four interceptions, was subjected to some bad interception luck. In fact, six of his nine interceptions this season were for reasons not of his own fault, including two passes in which he was hit as he threw, two passes that his receivers ran the wrong way or broke their route wrong, another that his receiver just simply fell down and one that went right through his receiver’s hands."

I don't think Zach is the second coming of Steve Young, but he's without a doubt the best QB on the roster. Remember, there's a reason the coaches chose Zach over Jaren and Baylor at the beginning of the year AND the end of the year (even after Romney's wins). Zach was still the best option to help us win. But he's gotta have guys to throw to and have some help from those around him. Even Ty Detmer ran into issues as a SENIOR, starting 0-3 with struggling receivers and tight ends and it took time to gel.

And that's not to say I don't love Jaren and Baylor, I think they were tremendous in their roles. Let's be honest about Romney's performance, the Boise State game surprised everyone. Boise came in overconfident. We reworked our offense and took advantage of Baylor's skills (which I'm very impressed with) and took advantage of big turnovers and three big scoring plays in the second half: A long breakaway Finau TD run, a 4th down misdirection pop pass play to Bushman that went for a long TD (which we hadn't run that season), a double reverse flea flicker for a long touchdown. After that, we couldn't do squat and hung on for dear life, winning a squeaker. Utah State was bad and defeated. Baylor was really efficient and took it home for us when he replaced Jaren in the second half. Then we hung on to a small lead to beat Liberty where Baylor wasn't able to duplicate his Boise-like performance going against worse competition. None of these teams had even close to the talent of Tennessee or USC, BYU and Zach's marquee wins of 2019. Romney never faced that level of size, speed, strength or athleticism. Zach will go toe-to-toe with Jaren and Baylor in spring and fall camp and will be the starter. Barring injury, and with the hopeful emergence of some playmakers around him, he'll have a great year.
