The case fatality rate is different than total number of deaths.
If you get SARS you have a higher probability of death than if you get covid-19. However, more people have gotten covid-19 then have gotten SARS, so even though the case fatality rate is lower for covid-19 than for SARS, more people have died from covid-19.
