Crowton has much better recruiting years than any coach since. That has more to do with the external aspects of BYU's program than the internal IMO. BYU was much more highly regarded by LDS top tier talent during Crowton's tenure than any time since. It has been a steady drip for more than two decades, accelerated by various events such as the rape scandal under Crowton's tenure, Utah making it to the PAC etc. But the steady drip was pretty embryonic in the Crowton years. Guys who listened seriously, and even came to BYU then, don't give Kalani much thought.
