I think people are actually far more informed than before, but...
rather than listening to various perspectives, we've all found our ideological echo chambers to justify our beliefs. It's far easier to find good enough responses to other's points that fit our preferred narrative so we can just dismiss good arguments.

Completely agree, except your verbiage “net negative.” I’d suggest “overwhelming negative” and maybe still understated
