I don’t think you have to have a passport as long as you leave and return to

the same US port. That used to be the rule. I don’t know if it’s changed. However, they recommend having one even if you don’t technically need one in case of something unexpected. For example, if something were to happen and you had to fly home suddenly, now you aren’t returning to the same US port, so you would need a passport.
